Where is Karlie Guse?

Karlie Guse disappeared on October 13th, 2018, from Bishop, California. Everything we know about her disappearance has been information given by her father and stepmother. This is their account.

On the night of October 12th, Karlie called her stepmother, Melissa, to pick her up at 8 pm. She reportedly told her to hurry. Karlie had skipped a football game to hang out with her boyfriend and friends. When Karlie's stepmother went to pick her up, she found Karlie running frantically down a dark road. On the way home, Karlie displayed erratic behavior such as fearing that the vehicle would kill her and repeatedly switching seats in the car. She was clearly under the influence, and whatever she used caused her to experience severe paranoia. The Guses reported that she admitted to using marijuana with her friends.

Once Karlie arrived home, she continued her erratic behavior. She reportedly had very dilated pupils and displayed paranoia. She referred to the lettuce in the salad she was given as "devil's lettuce" and spit it out. That night, Melissa used a video recording app to record her stepdaughter while she was high, so she could play it back to her to show her how she sounded and acted when she was high.

This is where I've encountered some contradictory information. In one article, it states that "The next morning, around 5:45 a.m., Melissa said she went through her usual routine of opening the kids’ doors and saying good morning to them. She told Dateline she saw Karlie in her bed at that time. Melissa said she then went back to sleep for a little bit. But when she woke up a little bit later and opened Karlie’s door again, Karlie was nowhere to be found." - (https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/missing-in-america/amp/sixteen-year-old-karlie-gus-missing-after-vanishing-california-home-n923066) However, in other articles, and on the Dr. Phil show, on which the Guse's and Karlie's biological mother appeared (more on that below), Melissa ..." stated she eventually she got the teen calm and even slept in her room with her all night to make sure she was OK." (https://www.crimeonline.com/2018/10/26/karlie-guse-stepmom-admits-i-gave-the-wrong-description-of-my-daughter/). To some sources, she stated that she slept in Karlie's bed with her all night, and in others, she states she only found out she was missing when she checked up on her at 5:45. This is a red flag for me.

Karlie was never seen again.
I find Dr. Phil to be condescending and exploitative. Not a fan of his, but the clips from this particular episode on YouTube were interesting. All three of the adults in Karlie's life seemed "off". I saw a lot of scrunched up faces but not a single real tear for the missing girl. Her biological mother, named Lindsey Fairley, is convinced that Karlie's father and his wife are responsible for her disappearance. Lindsey was played the audio of Karlie soon after her disappearance, and she claims that Karlie asked Melissa to call 911 in the audio and that Melissa refused to help her. Lindsey believes that Karlie probably OD'd and that the Guses covered it up. (Lindsey didn't play a big role in Karlie's life, but I was unable to find any exact reason. I'm not sure if she lost custody of Karlie or if she simply allowed her to live with her father and stepmother.)

The Guses came off as trying to cover their own asses, and Karlie's mother just seemed like she was trying to drag Zac (Karlie's father) and Melissa's names through the mud. This might be an unfair assessment of frantic parents - see for yourself.

One thing I found very strange was that the Guses refused to allow Dr. Phil to listen to the audio recording of Karlie that her stepmother took the night before she went missing. They even lie at first, telling him that they did allow his team access to the recording. When he calls them out and tells them that that's false, Melissa tells him that she's ok with him hearing the tape, but "not the world". I find it strange that they refused to allow him to listen to the tape. If she was in some sort of drug-induced psychosis, the recording could have given a mental-health expert valuable insight into her state of mind that night, which could lead to clues as to her whereabouts. Perhaps they feared that Dr. Phil would draw false conclusions, casting them in a bad light to make for good TV. I'm not really sure what was going on through their minds.
In March of this year, Karlie's biological mother, Lindsey Fairly, filed a formal complaint against the Sheriff, claiming that she misused funds and ignored tips regarding Karlie's disappearance.

I think that Karlie ran away from her home, and in her disoriented state, she either got into the wrong car, came across the wrong person, or got into some type of accident that was then covered up by the perpetrator. I think that the recording held evidence of either verbal or physical abuse, which is why Melissa didn't want it to be released. I believe that Karlie was scared of her stepmother and/or her father, and ran away from them after they started yelling at/hitting her when she came home.

I don't think the Guses killed her or got rid of her body after an OD. However, I find the conflicting accounts of Melissa "finding out" the Karlie was missing to be disturbing. This casts suspicion on her and her husband, as there should be no reason for inconsistency this glaring. I guess it could be incorrect reporting on the part of a reporter. I'm not sure if I'm reading too much into that. Let me know what you think.
